The article “The problem of too many” seems to refer only to problems that affect humans. In fact, nature would sort out a “too many deer” problem (for example) on its own if left to its own devices. It managed to do that kind of thing long before humans entered the scene.
The real problem is too many humans. The Canadian population regulating itself by only having (on average) 1.9 children per family. However, since our economic system is based on continual growth, we must bring in at least 300,000 immigrants per year just to stay afloat.
It is only because of a sweet spot in earth’s evolution that humans were able to evolve at all. That sweet spot will not last forever. The problem of too many humans is making that sweet spot less sweet and shorter. As the sweet spot deteriorates, there is more competition for fewer and fewer resources leading to famine and war.
Nature could send a black plague again to solve the problem, but humans would come up with a vaccine to stop nature from taking its course.
The human predilection to ignore serious problems is not new. We are fiddling while Rome burns.
Please note that this letter has not been fact checked but rather is meant to alert people to what I think is probably happening.
