Re: Closing the Loop on Forest Protection?

I am a retired forester and a long-time member of Ontario Nature. Concerning your recent article in the 2019 Spring issue of the ON Nature magazine, my take is this:

You say that licenced companies under the Forest Stewardship Council certification process – by the way, American companies are subject to Sustainable Forestry Initiative standards – talk to Indigenous communities, environmental organizations and local stakeholders.

Unless the companies collaborate with local Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry staff, local MPPs and head office government people about the area to be set aside, it is not going to happen.

The Province is clearly responsible, and my opinion the Province is not going to set aside large blocks of commercial forest because they would lose the revenue. It’s all about the money.
